FAQs: The Top FAQs Customers Ask Fence Companies

Adding a fence to your property can be an exciting way to give your home a more finished look while giving you additional privacy and security. However, if you have never had a fence installed before, it is understandable that you may have questions about the process of adding a fence to your yard. To help you feel more comfortable as you start looking at fencing options for your property, we’ve gathered a list of just a few of the most frequently asked questions we receive.

How Much Does a Fence Cost?

For many homeowners budget is a concern when adding a fence to their property, which may lead you to wonder how much a fence installation will cost. However, this is a difficult question to answer as fence installation costs can vary greatly depending on the materials chosen and the length of the fence. On average, a typical residential fence will cost between $2,000 and $3,000 for an average yard; however, the price of your project will depend on a variety of factors. To get a better idea of how much your ideal fence will cost, consider calling to schedule an estimate. Keep in mind that while some materials such as vinyl will cost more at the outset, you could end up saving money in the long-run as these fences require little maintenance, and you likely will never have to have it replaced.

How Long Does Fence Installation Take?

How long it takes to install a fence depends on a variety of factors including the type and length of fence as well as the site conditions. On average, a fencing installation will take about two to three days, however, this time will likely be spread out over the course of a week in order to allow the cement to cure. Of course, customized components (if used) can take a while to build and can delay the completion of your project by several weeks.

How Long Will My Fence Last?

While this is a very common question we receive, the fact is that the answer can vary greatly depending on the type of fence you ultimately choose. For instance, a wooden fence will on average last around ten years before needing to be replaced. Alternatively, chain link fences have been known to last longer than 20 years, and vinyl fences likely won’t need to be replaced for as long as you live in your home. If longevity and low-maintenance are important to you when having a fence installed, your fencing contractor can go over your fencing options with you to help you make the best decision to meet your needs.

How Tall Can My Fence Be?

This is a common question amongst homeowners who are looking to get the maximum privacy out of their new fence; however, the answer will depend on where you live. In most residential areas, a fence cannot exceed six feet in height. However, these restrictions can vary greatly from town to town, and fence limitations may be more restrictive if you have an HOA. This makes it important that you check in with your HOA and local building codes department before adding a fence to your property.

Do I Need a Permit?

As you may have already guessed, you will likely need to obtain a city permit before you can build a new fence on your property. Fortunately, this type of building permit is not usually too difficult to obtain, and your fencing contractor will likely apply for this permit on your behalf.
